New Malaysian Record and rare migrant in Tawau

Mr. Stanley T Shao, a new bird photographer who took up the hobbby earlier this year, is one of the hardest working bird photographers in Sabah. He photographed two Sunda Teal (Anas gibberifrons) in Tinagat, Tawau on 20th December 2014. This species is basically an Indonesian bird and has been recorded in Kalimantan a number of times but this is the first record so far north in Borneo, and it is historic being the first record for Malaysia. The two ducks were very shy and skittish, they flew off as soon as Mr Shao alighted from his car trying to get closer. Lets hope that its occurrence here is a result of expansion of its natural range and we'll get to see it more often in the future. (For the record, MR. Kong Ket Leong also took record shots of the ducks the following day, they probably moved on somewhere else as they were not seen around the areas after that.)

Mr Shao also took photo of a European Starling (Sturnus vulgaris) at Tinagat, Tawau on 21st December 2014 among a group of Glossy Starling, this ia another rare find for Borneo. This is also significant as it is the first time this species is recorded in the East Coast of Sabah.
