Middle:Yellow-breasted Warbler Bottom:Chestnut-crested Yuhina Illustration by John Whitehead from his magnificent book “The Exploration of Kinabalu” published in London 1893. Whitehead made two expeditions to Kinabalu and was the first person to reach the actual summit on 11 Feb 1888. Many Borneo bird names commemorate him or his sponsors. “jefferyi” honors his father Jeffery and “juliae”honors Julia the wife of the Marquess of Tweeddale another sponsor. Whitehead died of malaria on Hainan island (S. China ) at age 38 in 1899.
