Grey-rumped Treeswift

Latin Name : Hemiprocne longipennis

Site Name : Kubah National Park

Photographer : SINGH HSS, Amar

Date : 2010-09-30

Notes : These were taken just outside Kubah National Park early in the morning(7.20am) against the morning sun.For a change these Grey-rumped Treeswifts were resting rather low on an electrical wire. There were two, a male and a female, sitting 15 meters apart, preening in the early morning.I grew up knowing these as the Crested Treeswifts see GC Madoc, An Introduction to Malayan Birds, 1976 and AG Glenister, The Birds of the Malay Peninsula, Singapore and Penang, 1971. Unfortunately that name now belongs to another bird, even though very appropriate to this one. For me locally, I still think of them as crested. They can look quite different when puffed up in the morning cold or when preening, and the crest can disappear momentarily. This photo is of the male.
